Art Through the Ages 16th editionThere are so many flaws in this book. The author is often makes dogmatic condescending comments. For instance, on page 18 when referring to the Venus of Willendorf he says, “The nickname is inappropriate and misleading.” Without defending that statement. Then I have to go look up the argument both pros and cons in an anthropology journal when he could have provided them in an objective manner instead of picking a side or he could have not brought the subject up. He frequently uses the term must, such as how a cave must have been used for religious ceremonies. Then when I go and look up the cave in an anthropological journal, that is not what the experts say. The experts usually put forth several theories, none of which can be taken as the correct one because there are no primary sources. There was no written language at the time and there are no survivors. The problem with this weak writing and logic is it makes me question everything he writes. Was he right about the Buddha, what about Hinduism? Is he just spouting his opinion when he talks about history, religion, art?Every time he says ‘it must have been’… I think to myself, “If I really want to know the expert opinions on this matter, I have to go look at another scholarly source.” Unfortunately, I don’t have time to do that every other page.He also does a horrible job with image placement relating to the text. I’m constantly flipping back and forth to find an image. While that may make sense later in the book if he’s referring to something that was introduced earlier it doesn’t make sense in the very first chapter. It’s just lazy, sloppy layout.It’s very sad because this book, now in its 16th edition is a must read for art students all over the world. The art education world deserves better than this. Art schools deserve an objective and accurate art history. When referring to archeology he should have an expert cowrite this with him or at a minimum edit his work. His petty opinions have cheapened this book. The poor layout is just adds insult to injury. So I really enjoyed this book for art history purposes, but I suppose that is largely due to the fact that I really enjoy a more "western" history focus. This book, to me, really dedicates a lot of time to western art history and really focuses on Christianity and goes very much into depth on the Christian religion, which I was not into as much. Considering how big Islam is, there was a relatively small section dedicated to Islamic art, compared to Christian art. So all in all, I enjoyed it, but if you are looking for a TRUE "Global" Art History experience, this book may not be for you.
